Pattern is hosting an intimate dinner and book club-style discussion with British photographer Guy Martin ahead of his opening of The Parallel State at Pattern.
The Parallel State is a multi-layered project which began life as an examination of the Turkish soap opera and film industry, but evolved over the course of five years into a semi-fictional study of truth, reality and lies in contemporary Turkey. This blending of fact and fiction during a period that saw the rise of totalitarian rule in Turkey is deeply resonant to the experiences of contemporary American society.
Martin’s book of the work, published in 2018, is complex, beautiful and immersive. As a way to unpack it and experience it more deeply, a small group will spend an evening of dinner and drinks discussing the book’s themes and origins with the artist. The book can be purchased ahead of time here, borrowed from Pattern, or there will also be some copies for guests to look through at the dinner.
Tickets are $50 and the event is limited to 12 guests. Price includes a multicourse in-home meal and cocktails, with all proceeds going directly to the artist.
