Guy Martin will be leading an intensive, full day seminar on expanding the boundaries of documentary as a way to explore complex ideas. Martin began his career as a conflict photographer and but shifted his practice after being badly wounded in Libya. During his recovery, he started photographing on Turkish soap opera sets which lead him on a five-year journey that resulted in his book The Parallel State, a semi-fictional study of truth, reality and lies in contemporary Turkey.
The morning will be spent with Martin unpacking his project, his shift in thinking and the things that influenced him along that path. During the afternoon, participants will share their own work, either a series of images or just an idea that they wish to pursue. Martin will then lead the group through discussions on how to crack open the structure of each project to expand beyond just the facts to bring in concepts of fiction and metaphor as a way of examining larger truths.
